The Amsterdam Science Talent Scholarship (ASTS) offered by the Faculty of Science is aimed at non-Dutch talented students from the European Union / European Economic Area who choose to do a Science Master’s programme.

The University of Amsterdam is a public university located in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Established in 1632 by municipal authorities and later renamed for the city of Amsterdam, the University of Amsterdam.

  • Entrance Requirements: Candidates for the ASTS are selected on the basis of their academic excellence and promise in the proposed field as evidenced by:
    • The candidate’s academic records. Students belonging to the top 10% of graduates from their class can apply. This means an overall grade point average equivalent to at least:
          • 3.5 (GPA American system)
          • 1st class honors / upper division British system
          • 8+ (Dutch EC-system); the academic quality of the educational institute where the undergraduate (or graduate) programme has been obtained;
        • At least two letters of reference from academic staff members;
        • The quality of the letter of motivation (maximum 500 words) in which the candidate explains the reasons for choosing the specific Master’s programme (broader context, relevance for future career);
        • A description of extracurricular activities such as participation in student commissions, international experience, sports or music at a high level or volunteer work;
        • Proof of English proficiency (IELTS/TOEFL): TOEFL (internet-based) –  overall score of 100 (with a minimum score of 22 in each of the different components), IELTS (academic) – overall score of 7.0 (with at least 7.0 in each of the four components);
        • The quality of the application as a whole (completeness, accuracy, consistency).

How to write a Personal Statement in few simple steps

Before Word

In order to apply for most of the international scholarships and even local, you need to write a personal statement.

Preferably to take into consideration would be also getting a letter of recommendation from one of your teachers or your school principle.

LSE provides a variety of joint degree programmes. If you’re applying to one of those programmes, you’re advised to give equal weighting to each topic on your announcement.

As an example, if you’re applying to our Government and Economics degree, you need to show signs of interest in the two subjects; a announcement weighted towards just 1 factor of this level will probably be significantly less aggressive.

Instance of a bad private statement

“I’ve always imagined coming to LSE because I was young. It’s been a fantasy of mine to research at this particular institution, which is well renowned for its social network classes.

I wish to study History since I wish to be a world class Historian, also believe that this level may help me. I’m particularly interested in Ancient History, especially the background regarding the Roman Empire. I’m fascinated by the manner by which the empire has been conducted, and also the events that caused its downfall.

“I had been the captain of the college soccer team, which has taught me the value of working collectively as a group, also enabled me to prioritise my time between my research and soccer practice. I believe that this has supplied me with all the expertise to successfully balance my social and academic life, and I intend to keep this equilibrium whilst at college.

This short illustration of a private statement is bad. The applicant has said an interest in history but they haven’t discussed this in depth or revealed any signs of broader involvement with the topic. Where the offender does speak about background, the conversation is shallow and centered on historical background, which LSE doesn’t provide as part of our background program.

The applicant has expressly mentioned LSE, which is very likely to be unattractive for their other options, also has wasted space record their International Baccalaureate themes, which could be revealed in the credentials section. The applicant has explained the way the background level will help them get the job they later desire, as opposed to what they’re excited about studying throughout the level.

The applicant has revealed about the transferable skills they’ve developed leading the soccer team. AFRICA FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

World Bank Group (WBG) Africa Fellowship Program for Sub-Saharan Africans in USA, 2018

 The Africa Region of the World Bank Group (WBG) is now accepting applications for WBG Africa Fellowship Program for PhD students and recent graduates who are Sub-Saharan nationals. Fellows will spend a minimum of six months at the World Bank offices in Washington, D.C. or in field offices, getting hands-on experience in development work.

Started in 2013 by World Bank Africa Vice President Makhtar Diop, the World Bank Group Africa Fellowship Program aims to build a pipeline of Sub-Saharan African researchers and professionals, particularly women, who are interested in working in the development field at home or abroad, and in starting careers with the WBG.

The World Bank Group has set two goals for the world to achieve by 2030: End extreme poverty by decreasing the percentage of people living on less than $1.90 a day to no more than 3% and Promote shared prosperity by fostering the income growth of the bottom 40% for every country.

Fellows are expected to work in English, so the ability to speak and write fluently is a requirement.

Course Level: This is a six months fellowship programme. Fellows will spend a minimum of six months at the World Bank offices in Washington, D.C. or in field offices, getting hands-on experience in development work.

Study Subject: Fellows will work on research, economic policy, technical assistance, and lending operations that contribute to the World Bank goal of eliminating poverty and increasing shared prosperity.

Scholarship Award: Specifically, selected participants will:

  • Gain a better understanding of the World Bank Group’s mission and operations
  • Access quality data for their research work

Sub-Saharan nationals who are recent PhD graduates or current doctoral students within a year of completing or graduating from a PhD program in the following fields: economics, applied statistics and econometrics, impact evaluation, education, health, energy, agriculture, infrastructure, demography, forced displacement, and all relevant development fields.

Candidates must:

  • be a recent PhD graduate or be enrolled in an academic institution as a PhD student and returning to university after the fellowship
  • have an excellent command of English, both written and verbal
  • possess strong quantitative and analytical skills
  • Be born on or after October 1, 1986

The following additional attributes are highly desirable:

  • a command of an additional World Bank official language
  • national from fragile and conflict-affected countries
  • candidates from refugee and internally displaced communities and/or with proven experience on forced displacement

College Admission Requirement

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must be a recent PhD graduate or be enrolled in an academic institution as aPh.DD. student and returning to university after the fellowship.

English Language Requirements: Applicants must have a command of an additional World Bank official language.

How to Apply: The mode of application is online. After applying online, the most suitable candidates will be identified, and their application packages forwarded to World Bank Africa Region managers and participating departments for consideration. Departments and managers will then indicate their preferences, as well as the project to be undertaken.

Selected candidates will then be notified and, upon acceptance, will be hired as short-term consultants for a minimum of six months. Fellows will receive consultant fees, round-trip economy class air travel to Washington, D.C. or a WBG country office from their university, and worker’s compensation insurance.

Need Based Grants to the U.S.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

CIEE’s need-based grants provide support for students facing financial barriers to studying abroad. To apply, you will need to provide your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Estimated Family Contribution (EFC), as displayed on your FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR). We award need-based grants based on students’ EFCs and program selection.

GAIN TRAVEL GRANT

$750 to $2,000 toward airfare; award amount depends on CIEE program location.

Eligibility: The Global Access Initiative (GAIN) Grant helps cover airfare to and from CIEE program locations for students who demonstrate financial need. Pell-eligible students are guaranteed a GAIN Grant if they submit their Scholarships Application by October 15 for January and spring programs, or by April 1 for summer and fall programs.  GAIN Grants are available on a first-come, first-served basis to students with a wider range of need and we offer GAIN Grants for all of our programs!

GILMAN GO GLOBAL GRANT

Go Global Grant recipients also automatically receive a GAIN Grant!

Semester Programs: $2,500 toward program costs
Summer Programs: $1,000 toward program costs

Eligibility: Qualified applicants for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship are guaranteed a CIEE Go Global Grant and a GAIN Travel Grant, regardless of whether they receive the Gilman Scholarship. That’s a program cost reduction and funding toward airfare! Students must submit their Scholarships Application by October 15 for spring programs, or April 1 for summer and fall programs to be guaranteed a grant.  After the deadline, we will continue to award until funds are exhausted.

Some institutions designate a specific financial aid or study abroad advisor to certify all Gilman Scholarship applications.

If your study abroad or financial aid advisor is not listed in the online application, please contact your advisor and ask him/her to create an account in the application system. Gilman staff will verify your advisor’s account within 2 business days. Once your advisor’s account is verified, you will be able to select your advisor from a drop-down menu within the online application. Please make sure that your advisor’s name is listed in the system well in advance of the deadline, as this information is required in order to submit an application.

Some institutions require a written release of information form before your advisors will be able to certify your application. Failure to submit a written release of information form to your advisor, if required by your university, will delay the processing of your application.

The African American and African Foundation on Science, Education and Economic Development, Inc. has a strong interest in raising funds for Black American development in economics and education. The U. S. lags behind several nations in the world on education of their youth. Although, the U. S. spends significantly more money on education than other countries.

There is, however, a real disparity between White and Black student’s education. More than 60 years after Brown vs Board of Education, school systems in the United States are separate and unequal. Many factors contribute to disparities in education. Lower wealth, lower health and lower parental education levels and more dealings with the justice system and other circumstances leave Blacks without the same educational opportunities as Whites. The economic opportunities provided by scholarships and jobs will improve Black education and cultural achievements.

The contribution from donors will be used for scholarships and jobs for Black youth and the Black community. Black American men, women and youth will be directed to complete a high school diploma and GEDs. Scholarships will be awarded to young mothers and fathers with children to educate themselves, and their children to achieve jobs.

Many Junior Colleges offer programs for six months to one year for a licenses in order to qualify for employment. The Health professions are almost always short of staff in every city. Another example, a young high school graduate in California enrolled in Diesel Mechanic School at the age of eighteen years old. Upon completing a one year program, he was hired as a Diesel Mechanical to repair school buses in California. His starting salary was over one Hundred Thousand Dollars per year. Now, he is married with a family and making a contribution to his community. Scholarships and jobs for the Black community are key elements to improving the community.

Black youth gain a measure of self-worth and self-esteem when they are valued and are contributors to their community and family. Their emotional and social challenges are managed better because of positive contributions to society.

Mandela Washington Fellowship reader application information

IREX seeks academic and professional experts to read and score applications for the 2018 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. Over the course of the first four years of the Fellowship, we received over 180,000 applications for 3,000 Fellow slots, so your talents and expertise in helping score applications are greatly appreciated.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship is the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), designed to support young African leaders as they spur growth and prosperity, strengthen democratic governance, and enhance peace and security across Africa.

In the summer of 2018, the Mandela Washington Fellowship will bring up to 700 young leaders to the United States for academic coursework and leadership training, and will create unique opportunities in Africa for Fellows to put new skills to practical use in leading organizations, communities, and countries.

Expectations of Readers

Readers will be responsible for evaluating program applicants based on set guidelines and a scoring rubric for the Mandela Washington Fellowship. Readers will each read 40 applications and may receive a $100 honorarium for their service (please note that US government employees and contractors will be assigned 30 applications, but are not eligible to receive an honorarium). Please note that for readers who do not have a US mailing address, we are unable to give you an honorarium due to the high cost of international money transfers.

Eligibility

Ideal readers are academics and/or professionals with expertise in one of the program’s thematic areas (business and entrepreneurship, civic leadership, or public management) or those who have experience working in Africa.

If you are interested in participating as a reader, please complete the application form no later than October 10, 2017. You will be asked to upload your resume, and we will confirm with you via e-mail whether you are selected to be a reader.
